Frequently Asked Questions
If you have any questions about S5 into S6 Course Choice, please let us know. We will populate this section with answers throughout the Course Choice period.
What is the purpose of S6?
The S6 experience is about adding to your qualifications portfolio at the highest SCQF level possible and gaining experiences that will set you up for the world of work or further learning.
I want to go to university, should I take more Highers or choose Advanced Highers?
Broadly, universities are looking for a range of Highers to demonstrate that young people can manage a workload and meet deadlines at SCQF level 6. In some cases, Advanced Highers can provide opportunities to deepen learning in subject areas, but are not always essential.
How many subjects do I need to choose in S6?
All young people in S6 need to study a minimum of 4 courses. In addition, young people are expected to undertake a volunteering or work experience placement as part of their study period. This will broaden their experiences and provide opportunities for young people to draw upon for applications and interviews. Young people will also gain accreditation for volunteering or work experience as a result.
I am thinking of leaving at the end of S5, but I want to wait for my exam results, what should I do?
All young people should make a course choice regardless of their plans for next year to ensure that they secure a space in the courses that they want. However, they should indicate on their form when they plan to leave.
Which column can I choose a virtual campus course?
You can opt for any virtual campus course in any column.
