Scam emails targeting parents/carers

PKC have been made aware of a scam attempt targeting parents/carers at one of the schools in Perth & Kinross. Samples of these emails can be viewed below.

As you will see, the main hallmarks of these scam emails are:

  • Use of a personal email (outlook.com) - genuine emails from KHS will be sent from an email account associated with the school (pkc.gov.uk)
  • Sent at a suspicious time
  • Urgency - we will never ask that a payment is made the same day out of the blue, particularly where the sum is large
  • PayPal - KHS will never collect monies via PayPal; we only use ParentPay to collect payments from parents/carers

This specific scam would be termed as "spear phishing". This is a type of phishing in which the scammer uses information learned about the target to make themselves more believable.  Scammers may impersonate teachers or staff who work at the school or include links which are specific to the school to make their email more convincing.

Although we are not aware of this being a widespread scam, we want to warn parents/carers as victims have been scammed out of large sums of money.

If you receive an email of this nature, please contact the school immediately so we can report it to the relevant council department. This is solely so that we can better help protect and mitigate against the effects of these scams. There is no harm in reaching out with a concern, even if it turns out to be a false alarm.
