This Year's Charity

Our chosen charities for 2016-17

This year the Sixth Year decided that as we are such a big school we should take on the challenge of supporting 2 charities. We are now proud to say that this school year we will be raising money for both Team Jak and Medécins Sans Frontières.

Team Jak was an aspiration of Jak Trueman, who was 14 when he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Lymphoma Cancer. Throughout his illness Jak raised over £100,000 for other cancer charities before deciding that he wanted to set up his own, to specifically help young people who found themselves in the same situation as him. Hence, Team Jak was founded. Just six days before Jak sadly died he informed his Mum, Allison, of plans he had for a facility to allow young people and their families, affected by long term illnesses, to escape from hospitals. It would provide space for them to have some time by themselves, but be in a safe environment. True to her word, Allison carried out her son’s legacy and set up “Jak’s Den”, a centre in Livingston.  This centre has had a really positive impact on many young people’s lives and now the charity has plans to open up a new, even bigger, centre.

Medécins Sans Frontières was set up forty years ago by a group of doctors who aimed to send medical aid around the world wherever and whenever it was needed. They have supported countries as they struggled throughout natural and man-made disasters, epidemics (including the Ebola crisis) and war. The assistance that Medécins Sans Frontières provide is regardless of race, religion or ideology. We feel that supporting this charity is a great way to educate both ourselves, and the younger years on some of the current world wide issues.

As a year group we are excited for the year ahead and we are keen to not only raise money, but raise awareness of the issues our charities support.
