Music Higher

Course Outline

The Higher Music course aims to make pupils aware of Music from different cultures around the world.

If you choose Higher Music the three elements of Music that you will study are– Performing, Understanding Music & Composing.


You will perform on two instruments or one instrument and voice for 12minutes at a minimum of grade 4.

The external assessment is a performance on both instruments to a visiting assessor in February or March of the exam year.

Understanding Music

Understanding Music will be delivered through a number of topic based activities: Music from Earlier Times, Blues & Jazz, Scottish Music, Popular Styles and World Music. Music concepts are put in their social and historical context.

The assessment is an examination paper in May of the exam year.


Compose one piece of music lasting between 1-3.30 minutes with an audio file and composition review.

The Music department has, over a number of years been building high quality music technology to support creativity and music writing.

The assessment is the submission of a composition with an audio file and composition review in March of the exam year.

Additional Information

Much of the teaching is done through practical work.

Practical and thinking skills will continually be developed and assessed throughout the course. Knowledge and understanding will be assessed on a continuous basis.

Studying Music requires a great deal of motivation, self-discipline and commitment from young people.  Regular practice, homework and also learning the key points after every lesson will be an ongoing feature of the course.

Studying Music at this level should lead on to Advanced Higher Music.

Music is recognised by a large number of employers as a valuable qualification for job entry because of the skills developed throughout the course so is a useful subject for young people to choose.
