Course Outline

The S3 Chemistry course aims to make pupils aware of the chemical basis of the world around them - for example, our food, clothes and the environment are all the results of chemistry in action.

The S3 course aims to show the contribution of chemistry to the quality of everyday life - searching for better fuels and producing plastics and other useful materials. Concern about the environment features strongly. 

In common with the other sciences the course aims to develop the skills necessary to find solutions to problems.  The essence of scientific enquiry is problem solving. Practical work has an essential place in the course, acting as a stimulus to interest and enjoyment as well as illustrating the course material.

The course provides a good basis for further study or for work.

 The Course consists of 3 main topics:

  • Chemical Changes and Structure – includes the Structure of the Atom and Rates of Reaction.

  • Nature’s Chemistry – includes the different chemicals in crude oil and how they react to give us many useful products. These products include fuels and plastics.

  • Chemistry in Society – includes metals, the latest technology in plastics, and other new materials.

Additional Information

Much of the teaching is done through practical work and scientific enquiry.

Practical and thinking skills will continually be developed and assessed throughout the course. Knowledge and understanding will be assessed on a continuous basis using tests after every topic.

As always, studying chemistry requires a great deal of motivation and commitment from young people.  Regular homework and also memorising the key points after every lesson will be an ongoing feature of the course.

Studying chemistry at this level should lead on to either National 4 or National 5 chemistry in S4.

Chemistry is recognised by a large number of employers as a valuable qualification for job entry because of the skills developed throughout the course so is a useful subject for young people to choose.
