S3 Biology

Course Overview

In third year pupils complete National 3 level biology work before studying about Life on Earth at National 4/5 level. The work covered includes learning about biodiversity, ecosystems, sampling techniques, natural selection and how the activities of man impact on the environment.

Organisation of Resources

Pupils are issued with a class jotter for notes and homework.

Our S3 course covers the key areas described in the 'Life on Earth' Unit Support Notes for National 4 and 5 Biology.   We use teacher-led discussion, cooperative group work and many formative assessment strategies to give pupils the opportunity to demonstrate and improve their knowledge, practical skills and skills for learning, life and work.

Pupils sit two tests during the year. The first in November and the second in May.These tests assesses knowledge and understanding as well as problem solving skills.

Homework is set regularly to support and consolidate classroom experiences.  Some homework assignments require pupils to carry out research in their own time.

Recording and Reporting

The tests form the basis for the comments in the pupil report issued to parents in June. Test results are also used to inform decisions about progression in S4, when pupils who choose Biology will continue their studies at either National 4 or National 5 Levels.
